Oral Presentation Reflection

First of all, I enjoyed the process of preparing for the oral presentation more than the actual thing itself.  For this, I have to thank Klara and Dave for being absolutely wonderful team mates to work with.  I can still vividly remember the jokes we shared and the good laughs over silly things that we did.  Team dynamics is an important element in making a team oral presentation a good one.  Simply because the transitions mustn't be abrupt and the content flow awkward.  These would require a group to be co-operative.  We had very productive discussion sessions, where ideas were flowing constantly and yet we were sure of the direction of our presentation.  We agreed unanimously that we wanted impactful presentation with minimal words on the slides.  We understood that less is more.  In short, we did not face any difficulty in preparing for the presentation.

In terms of delivery, I spoke faster than I expected.  This left me with limited time to go through the next point in my head before delivering it.  As such, the words coming out of my mouth were somewhat gibberish at times.  Apart from that, I found out (after watching the video) that my hand gestures were somewhat too 'lively' and distractive.

Moving on to the visual aids, I realised that I was rather nervous in the beginning.  It didn't start off as well as I thought it would be.  Nevertheless, I gained composure after some time.  I pin this down to over dependence on visual aid, where I had to constantly refer to them.  After the mock interview, I felt that I could do better with having the skeletal ideas in my mind and delivering them with minimal visual aids.  Through the video, I realised that I had the tendency to look at the slides more often than I needed to.  As such, I should have prepared less slides and put up only pictures that would help me explain myself.

In a nutshell, these 2 months have been a very positive learning experience for me, not only in terms of writing proposals and doing oral presentation but also in working with a team.  I enjoyed every bit of the time spent.  Thanks, Klara and Dave.  We shall go and have our hard earned ice cream next Tuesday :)

  1. Oh YEAH~ I enjoyed the time with you and Dave too :D
I thought you were amazing for the OP. Any presentation will need to have a strong opening and I think you nailed it.
I too feel that we are better off without the visual aids (or maybe not too much).

  2. Hi Ning,

I like the slides very much. They are concise and emphasis the key points!I can tell from the slides that your team worked hard on your project and OP!No pain no gain, your OP is brilliant!

For the strenght,I think you made good eye contact with the audience. It is always a pleasure to hear you talking, because your speech is clear and the tone is nice.

For the weakness,I agreed that your hands moved a little bit more during the OP.What's more, the slides and your oral explanation did not match well at the beginning of the OP.I'm not sure is it because you were a bit nervous at the beginning?

Anyway,I like your OP very much! Great job!!:)

  4. Hi Ning,

I would like to say you did a good job.

    Strengths:
I feel that you made an effort to speak slower this time round and it was much clearer. I could understand your objectives clearly and the pictures you showed define the overcrowding problem at the science canteen.

    Weakness:
I only noticed one weakness in your OP. You might want to adjust the brightness and contrast of your pictures next time because it was too dark.

Lastly, your OP was well done! All the best for your future OPs:)

  5. Png Ning! My impression of your presentation was largely positive and impactful. Looking at the slides often may not necessarily be a bad thing as it directs the attention of the audience to the slides, and in your case, there were important figures and statistics on the slides. Your voice volume and tone was good throughout, although at times you did not seem as convincing as you could be. But a great job overall!

  6. Hello Png Ning!

Generally, your tone and eye contact throughout the presentation was good. In addition, you were clear and we could follow you and your ideas. All these made your part of the OP relatively convincing. We could see that you were making a conscious effort to calm down and collect yourself, which is not a bad thing!

What kind of distracted me what that you would rest your arm on the table in front of you and hold onto the table, such that you tend to lean on that arm, making your body language seem slightly informal. And also distracting me was your trinklet/bracelet on your right wrist everytime you make hand gestures (sorry, maybe its just me?)

Overall, your group gave a strong OP :)
